| Bio: | Name: Penny Lane Briggs Date of Birth: March 25th, 1965 Age: 43 Race/Species: Witch Hometown: Cortland, NE Physical description: Without her unique style, Penny could easily blend into the background and never be noticed. She has long, dark hair, is neither especially attractive nor ugly, isn't exceptionally tall or short (about 5'7") and is of an average build. She also wears glasses, though not a strong prescription. And at 43, she is approaching the age range of women where they become essentially invisible, undetected on society's radar so they can get away with murder. PB: Janeane Garofalo Personality: Penny is definitely an independent woman from the 80s. Some of her more pleasing nicknames include "Feminazi", "Dyke", "Ball Buster", "Freak", and in modern day, "Hipster". Oddly that last one is the only one that bothers her. She is an independent thinker, and mostly prefers books and the internet to real people. Penny tends to dismiss people quickly at first with a snide comment, hoping that rudeness will send them away before they can bother her. It isn't that she minds people, exactly, but she feels they mind her and she is just saving them time. Background: Penny was raised by hippies in a cute little town in Nebraska. Her parents, while not shunned by the neighbors, received odd looks from them on a regular basis. They were the incense burning, guitar playing, backyard fire pit, organic granola kind of people. Both her mother and father are also full blooded witches, introduced through their families. Penny comes from two very long lines of very powerful witches. Growing up with magic, Penny never thought that it was weird, though other people seemed to think so. She didn't really try to hide it but her parents told her not to flaunt it, either, so what she ended up with was a mix of people who thought she was creepy and some who thought she was a freak. Plus, in Nebraska, a great deal of them thought she was a Satan worshipper. So Penny kept to herself, honing her craft and learning about the different kinds of magic she could do. After high school, she decided that she had seen enough of her home town and would like to explore more options. Having heard promising things about the East coast, like it was full of heathens and they didn't have the proper fear of God in their hearts, and all the bleeding heart liberals and feminist nazis and an epidemic of "The Gays" had broken out over there, Penny thought it sounded perfect. So off to Middlebury college she went, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Women's Studies. Unfortunately, Vermont didn't offer her the freedom of expression she had hoped for. Her tattoos and piercings and clothing fit in a bit better, but when she told people she was a witch they all assumed it was some kind of religious choice. Plus they all assumed she was a lesbian, which was a stigma she had hoped to leave behind in Cortland. And people in the east were colder to strangers, both a blessing and a curse. Penny often liked being left alone, but she didn't like feeling like she was alone, which was how she felt for a very long time. Her parents gave her a few years to "find herself" before they broached the idea of marriage, specifically to a very nice witch boy named Darren Clarke that they knew (through family friends and the like). Penny was absolutely against the antequated notion of arranged marriage, and the boy himself wasn't really thrilled with being set up with someone who had a "great personality". But they went on a few dates, and while it wasn't exactly magic, they found one another very tolerable and their families were putting a great deal of pressure on them, so after two years of dating they decided to get married. And after six years, they got divorced again. It wasn't a bad splitting, they just realized that not wanting to be harassed by family wasn't a good enough reason to keep being married. They wanted different things from life, things that sort of clashed with one another. Darren wanted a more corporate, successful life, and Penny wanted something more artistic and meaningful. So they sold their house and moved, Darren to California and Penny down to Cambridge, MA, where she became a counselor at the Planned Parenthood. She was content enough there for a few years, with no social life to speak of, going nowhere with her magical abilities because there was no one around to teach her anything new. Reading was one thing, but application was another. She did get a lucky break though, when one of the girls who came in for condoms was talking to a friend about this place she knew of where it was rumored that there were people in there who could fly, and there were weird animals in there and stuff. So Penny got the details, and did a lot of research and discovered the TJS Detention Facility was a school for supernatural beings. The prospect excited her- a place to work as well as learn, and maybe meet more people like herself. People who didn't call her a Wiccan.
